Chef Josue's house

Chef Josue invited us for a delightful Mayan feast prepared by his wife.  Here is a picture of me explaining the toothfairy book to his daughter and nephew :)

Scorpion

Picture
It’s 3:15 AM, and I have a 4” scorpion trapped under a glass vase on the bathroom floor.  I had other ideas about creating a successful barricade, but without knowing how it got in here in the first place, I don’t really know how to contain it.  As I watch him move around, I think the 4” estimate was on the small side.  He is only 4” when his tail is curled and he is not stretching his pinchers.    I really want to take a picture; but would that say more about me than the scorpion?  Who takes pictures of poisonous creatures in the bathroom in the middle of the night?

I looked fruitlessly for Celso in the darkness.  Of course he would probably kill the thing instantly, and then I never would have a photograph.

The scorpion looks so powerful, that I am going to have to observe it for a while to make sure he cannot lift-up the glass vase.  Even at that, I don’t know how I will ever fall asleep with the sound of his pinchers tapping on the sides of the vase.  This would be much easier if he would just take a nap rather than fight for his life.

He can actually stand up on that tail to investigate heights.  Poor baby Coyotito never had a chance.

I think I am going to have to video it…  Then I will try to scoot it outside in the vase.  Hopefully Celso will find it and it will just disappear – like the trash you set out on the curb.

---

4 AM:  Well, I ushered it outside and left a note for Celso and left the light on, and after a moment, he came and we investigated.  Apparently I killed it by suffocating it under the glass vase.  But he killed it again because I absolutely refused to believe it was actually dead.

Celso checked the room and perimeter for more scorpions, because apparently there are usually two of them.  He didn’t see any, so I will just have to cross my fingers.

Then we looked at pictures of home.

I have an hour and a half to rest before he wakes me up again for his English class; so I really need to relax…  [followed by 4 minutes of scratching the bites on my legs until they started bleeding and cold chills ran up both of my shins…]  Now I’ve moved on to pulling out my eyebrows.  I’m not sure why I’m so paranoid.  I fell asleep peacefully last night with myriad dangers lurking in the jungle, and now there is one less potential danger.  I should be relieved and unburdened.

I’ll work on that.

In the meantime, I’m thinking about tonight.

The primary  (and then a spider drifts in front of my face and on to the bed…  I might start crying.  I might as well be sleeping in the hammock.)  …anyway, the primary school in town is having graduation tonight.  Three of the employees here have children who are involved in the spectacle:  a pirate, a gypsy, and a zebra.  Magali says that I should go around 6:00 to secure a seat because if I wait until later, I will be able to hear what’s going on, but not see any of the kids.  So, I might just do that and take a book or something to entertain myself for the two hours before the show.  Normally that is not the kind of thing I would do – wait around for a pageant to start – but I am only in these people’s lives for a short while, and it would be fun to see the kids, and if I miss this, I will never again have the opportunity. I guess that’s worth sitting around for.

Stuffed Animals

Picture
Children in the foundation make these adorable stuffed animals to purchase school books and help their mothers.  All of the money goes to the foundation.  If you would like one, I'll bring it home with me -- $15.
